Nikko AM in the News

Nikko Asset looks abroad, Pensions and Investments

The article highlights some of the key changes Nikko AM has made toward its goal of becoming Japan's first big independent money manager. While gathering $1.2-$1.5 billion in monthly net inflows since April, Chairman and CEO Timothy McCarthy has also been successful in: bringing in 3 independent directors, trimming the Japanese equity management team, and ending personnel rotation.

Against the backdrop of solid domestic retail sales, Nikko AM is now seeking to increase institutional business as well, the article notes. Bill Wilder, brought on as president and CIO in July 2004, has made crucial structural changes to attract further institutional and international interest. Among the overhauls led by Mr. Wilder are: making research analysts report to money managers, boosting performance-related compensation for portfolio managers, and introducing an employee stock option plan.

The article also mentions the hiring of Yu Iwata, former vice president of marketing at Goldman Sachs Asset Management in Tokyo; Lora-Ann Chiginsky, former associate director of international business development at Wellington Management Co.; and Christina Alfandary, former vice president at Gabelli Asset Management; as part of Nikko AM's effort to improve international sales and marketing.

But the article also outlines the challenges that McCarthy and Wilder face to change Nikko AM's corporate culture and overcome Japanese investors' long-standing distrust of investments.

The article also reported the progress being made. In the year ended on March 31, 2004, Nikko earned $15 million and almost half of Nikko AM's funds performed better than their peers. McCarthy vows to increase the firm's assets to $100 billion and generate $80 million to $100 million in profit in the next four to five years.

Mr. Outside, Institutional Investor, page 92

Timothy McCarthy, Nikko AM Chairman and CEO, was profiled in a feature article in the November 2004 edition of Institutional Investor magazine.
